Magnesium is the eighth-most abundant mineral in the Earths crust and is, chemically, ? less dense than aluminium. The mineral plays an essential role in all living things as one atom of Magnesium is present in the very centre of every chlorophyll molecule, the molecule that allows plants to photosynthesise and convert sunlight into energy. Joseph Black was the first to identify Magnesium as an element in 1755, distinguishing magnesia from lime (magnesium oxide from calcium oxide), and Humphry Davy first isolated the metal in 1808. Magnesium naturally occurs in green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and kale, as well as nuts, brown rice, whole grain bread, fish and meat.
Magnesium is one of the bodys electrolytes, contributing to the electrolyte balance. In addition, the mineral contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue by aiding normal energy metabolism. Magnesium also benefits the normal function of the psychological and nervous system, plays a role in cell division and protein synthesis, and helps to maintain normal bones.
