What is Inositol?
Inositol is a water-soluble compound that is structurally similar to that of a vitamin. For this reason, Inositol is often deemed as Vitamin B8, even if it is not strictly a vitamin. The compound was initially discovered in 1850 although interest in the vitamin-like substance only grew in the 1940s. The name 'Inositol' is derived from the Greek word inos which means 'muscle'.
The active substance in Inositol is called Myo-Inositol which occurs in three forms. Inositol naturally occurs in foods such as fruits, beans, grains and nuts. Foods richest in Inositol include cantaloupe melon and oranges, although the compound is found in smaller quantities in lecithin oil, brown rice, soy flour and green leafy vegetables. Inositol can also be produced by our bodies from the carbohydrates that we consume.
Benefits of Inositol
Inositol may be supplemented for several reasons. Primarily, the compound helps to breakdown fats. This is particularly useful in areas where high-fat accumulation can be harmful to health, such as the brain or heart. This is why the majority of Inositol found internally collects in the brain and heart. Inositol also works as a neurotransmitter and transduction molecule, a molecule that transfers signals inside a cell.
