The Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus) is native to New Zealand, and is one of the biggest mollusc species in the world, reaching up to 24cm. As its name suggests, the defining feature of the mussel is its �green lips� - a green colouring to the edge of its shell at the opening. They are a low risk for contaminants like mercury (which can feature in other shellfish), largely due to the clear and unpolluted waters around New Zealand. The green-lipped mussel is a staple food of the indigenous M?ori people of the country�s coasts. Interest in the mussel�s potential health benefits began in the early 1970s and stemmed from the observation that coastal M?ori people had a lower incidence of arthritis than M?ori people who lived inland.
