What is Folic acid?
With 50% of pregnancies being unplanned, Folic acid is an essential nutrient for all women to supplement in their diets. Research has shown Folic acid to significantly decrease the risk of neural tube defects in children. As the body is unable to store or produce large quantities of Folic acid, Folic acid supplementation is even more crucial. Folic acid is a B vitamin and is, therefore, water-soluble. This means that although it is naturally found in specific foods (found in the form of folate), Folic acid is often lost when cooking with liquid. Good sources of Folic acid include green leafy vegetables, such as kale, broccoli, spinach and Brussel sprouts, alongside beans and legumes, yeast and beef extracts, oranges, wholegrain foods, poultry, and pork.


Benefits of Folic acid
Folic acid is essential during pregnancy as low maternal folate status is a risk in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. Taking a supplement of Folic acid increases the maternal folate status, decreasing the risk of spina bifida. The Department of Health currently advises taking a daily 400mcg folic acid supplement before and during pregnancy, up until 12 weeks of pregnancy. Women are encouraged to supplement their diet as soon as their menstrual cycle begins although if this is not the case, supplementation should begin as soon as pregnancy is known. Folic acid is often paired with Vitamin B12 to prevent or treat Folate Deficiency Anaemia, which affects the body�s ability to produce fully functioning red blood cells.
