Origins of Dong Quai
Dong Quai is a small perennial plant, growing up to 3ft in height and producing clusters of white flowers. The plant is native to China and Japan, growing well in high altitude regions. The plant belongs to the Apiacacae family and is traditionally used in China for women's health. The name translates to 'state of return' in Mandarin.

The root is the most popular part of the plant as it provides the most nutritional benefits. Dong Quai is typically prepared in teas and tinctures, usually with other herbs to accompany it. Dong Quai is botanically known as Angelica sinensis, a name which came about from an old Chinese folktale where an angel appeared to a monk in a dream and told him to use Dong Quai to cure the plague that had spread throughout the country.

Benefits of Dong Quai
Dong Quai contains two active ingredients; coumarin and ferulic acid. The root is consumed to help the maintenance of womens health, specifically the urogenital system. This works in conjunction with immunity. Secondly, the root is believed to protect cartilage tissue to strengthen our bones, enhancing mobility which is an important factor as we age. Other health benefits include Dong Quais ability to protect the body from free radicals which cause stress and damage to other cells, as well as supporting oxygen transportation to enhance blood circulation.
