5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that your body naturally produces from the amino acid L-tryptophan. L-tryptophan is one of the building blocks that form protein and is commonly found in soy products, red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, oat bran, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, spirulina, cheese and dark chocolate.

5-HTP is a compound which plays a role in the creation of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are also known as the body's chemical messengers used by the nervous system to transmit specific signals. They are widely involved in the function and integrity of the peripheral and central nervous systems.

Neurotransmitters are involved in the control of blood pressure, heart rate, liver function, sleep, memory, appetite, mood, metabolism, temperature control, hormone regulation, among others.

Tryptophan is found in a wide array of foods, including red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, soy products, oat bran and dark chocolate. The active ingredient is frequently used by those with sleep insomnia or reduced concentration.
